The word "Kumbhar" is originated from the sanskrit word "Kumbhakar". That means - clay pot maker.
The word "Kumbhakar" in Dravidian languages another name of "Potter" is "Prajapati". The word "Bhande" is also used to refer to the "Kumbhar" caste. which is synonymous with the word "Kumbhar". "Bhande" literally means - "vessel".
- The potters of Amritsar are called "Kulal" or "Kalal". The term is used in the "Yajurveda" for the class of potters.
- It is an important service to society and manufactures all kinds of utensils used by the family.
- These people are counted among the servants of the village.
The "Prajapati" society is very ancient, because the five "Pandavas", including "Draupadi", stayed in the house of "Prajapati".
